Salt Lake County

Law Enforcement

The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake (UPD) is a police department located in Salt Lake County, Utah. UPD serves the communities of Brighton, Copperton, Holladay, Emigration Canyon, Kearns, Magna, Midvale, Millcreek, and White City. UPD was formed in 2010 by the Salt Lake County government, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, and several contributing municipalities.

In 2024, as a result of House Bill 374[1], passed in 2023, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office re-established its Law Enforcement Bureau and assumed responsibility and jurisdiction over unincorporated areas of Salt Lake County.

Fire/EMS

Almost all Fire/EMS is dispatched through Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC), and occurs on the “VECC Fire/EMS X” channels.

Salt Lake City Fire Department and Sandy City Fire Department are both dispatched through SLC911. Both cities have their own dedicated channels.

Throughout Salt Lake County, all Fire Departments follow one standardized naming/numbering scheme. All units capable of Paramedic-level Advanced Life Support (ALS)* are identified as “Medic {Apparatus Type} {Number}”, whereas Basic Life Support (BLS) units are identified as “{Apparatus Type} {Number}”. Ex. “Medic Engine 61” has a Paramedic, but “Engine 110” does not.

*Not to be confused with ALS at the Advanced EMT level, often referred to as Limited Advanced Life Support or Intermediate Life Support.

Unified Fire Authority (UFA) provides fire/EMS services throughout unincorporated Salt Lake County, and many contracted cities/towns in Salt Lake County, as well as one city in Utah County. In the county-wide unit-numbering scheme, UFA is assigned the “10s” block, but due to their large number of stations, UFA uses three-digit identifiers for most units: - Full-time units, staffed by personnel certified both as firefighters and EMS providers (EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic), are designated in the 100-series, indicating their dual-role firefighting and medical response capability (e.g., Medic Engine 101, Medic Ambulance 101). - Part-time units, staffed exclusively by personnel trained in either firefighting or EMS, are designated in the 200-series and co-located with their 100-series counterparts, so that on-scene command can immediately recognize their medical-only role (e.g., Medic Ambulance 225 at Station 125). Note: This does not include stations in Eagle Mountain. - Battalion chief units, aligned with UFA’s assigned 10s block, carry two-digit identifiers (Battalion 11, Battalion 12, Battalion 13).

UFA serves the communities of Copperton, Cottonwood Heights, Eagle Mountain, Emigration Canyon, Herriman, Holladay, Kearns, Magna, Midvale, Millcreek, Riverton, Taylorsville, Alta, Brighton, White City, as well as unincorporated areas of Salt Lake County.
