The Ohio government authorized the creation of Marion County on February 12, 1820. The residents named the county in honor of Revolutionary War General Francis "The Swamp Fox" Marion. It is located in north central Ohio and falls under the Marion Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is the City of Marion, it is the only city in the county. There are seven villages and fifteen townships.
