Elizabeth Police
EPD does not use car numbers as radio identifiers. Rather they use a system that identifies the given unit's sector and type, or rank.
- Alpha units are day shift, 06:45-17:45, patrol units. For example 7-Alpha would be a day shift patrol unit assigned to sector 7, and so on.
- Baker units are night shift, 17:45-06:45, patrol units. For example 4-Baker would be a night shift unit assigned to sector 3, and so on. These are also known as the midnight cars.
- Sierra units are single man cars regardless of shift. For example 2-Sierra would be a single man car assigned to sector 2.
- Power units are so named because they are assigned to the highest crime sectors and work the highest crime hours, 17:00-04:00. For example Power 11 would be a high-crime area vehicle assigned to sector 11. These are the busiest units at night.
- Chief is Unit 1.
- Captains radio ID's are single digits.
- Lieutenants radio ID's end in 4's. For example Unit 24, 34, 44, etc.
- Sergeants radio ID's are 25 thru 31.
If a unit is utilizing an unmarked car, their identifier will include the prefix "unmarked", such as "Unmarked 3-Baker" or "Unmarked Power-10".
