Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department operates on three separate 24-hour rotation shifts. Each shift is led by a Deputy Fire Chief. The county is separated geographically into seven battalions, each managed by a battalion management team of a Battalion Fire Chief and EMS Captain. Fire suppression personnel and paramedics work in tandem to ensure the highest level of safety and care possible for the residents of Fairfax County.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue is a combination carreer and volunteer department as well as system. Together with their partners: City of Fairfax Fire Department, Fort Belvior Emergency Services, Mount Vernon Association Fire Brigade are dispatched by the Fairfax County Department of Public Safety Communications.

Resource Deployment

Fairfax County has a daily minimum staffing of 356 full time positions that staff 128 pieces of rolling stock to provide primary first response to the community. An additional 62 pieces of specialty apparatus are strategically positioned based on risk or regional deployment, and crossed staffed to support ongoing operations as they develop. The FCFRD keeps 43 apparatus in reserve to support units in the field for maintenance and repair. The individual volunteer organizations will supplement and up-staff units for high volume or scheduled special events. [1]

Incident Unit Response Assignments

  • Still Alarm - 2 Engines, 1 Truck, 1 BC (Odor of Smoke/Other, Appliance Fires, Chimney Fires)
  • Box Alarm - 4 Engines, 2 Trucks, 1 Rescue, 1 EMS Unit, 2 EMS Supervisor, 2 BC, Safety Officer, Investigator
  • Box Alarm - High Rise - 5 Engines, 2 Trucks, 1 Rescue, 2 EMS Units, 2 EMS Supervisor, 2 BC, Safety Officer, Investigator
  • Additional Alarm - Every alarm after the first will bring at least three engines, one truck, and one Battalion Chief. Additional alarms may also include specialty units. (Light and Air, Canteen, Deputy Chief of Operations, Communications 403, etc)
  • RIT Level 2 - 1 Engine, 1 Truck, 1 Rescue, 1 ALS Unit, 1 BC

10 Codes and Unit Status Codes

Sometimes you will hear activity status codes if a unit is voicing its status over the radio rather than the MDT. Status abbreviations:

  • AIQ - Available In Quarters
  • AOR - Available On Radio Activity Codes
  • 11 - Returning to quarters
  • 32 - Administrative
  • 33 - Procuring Food
  • 40 - Transfer for coverage
  • 56 - District Familiarization
  • 10-61- DOA

Response Conditions

  • Condition 1- Normal operations are considered Condition 1.
  • Condition 2- Condition 1 is downgraded to Condition II during an extended period of increased incident response. While in Condition 2, initial response assignments are reduced to conserve the availability of units.
  • Condition 3- Condition 1 or 2 is downgraded to Condition 3 when greater than 50% of units are either committed to incidents or out of service. While in Condition 3, responses will be reduced dramatically to conserve resources.

Patrols and Shifts

A listing of patrols, shifts, and special unit designations.

  • Sully Station (sta 1): All designators in the "one-hundred" range
  • Mt. Vernon (sta 2): All designators in the "two-hundred" range
  • McLean (sta 3): "three hundred"
  • Mason (sta 4): "four-hundred"
  • Reston (sta 5): "five-hundred"
  • Franconia (sta 6): "six hundred"
  • W. Spfld (sta 7): "seven hundred"
  • Fair Oaks (sta 8): "eight hundred"
  • Units that begin with a 9, like 970B, are field units and cover as backup to the entire district. You can tell what station they're assigned to by looking at the second digit in their designator. Example: 970B is from West Springfield, Station 7 - 950B would be from Reston, Station 5.

Shift Differentiation:

  • Midnights- "Adam" unit (e.g. "two-forty adam") is midnight unit assigned to area 240
  • Daywork- "Baker" unit (e.g. "eight-hundred baker")is daywork assigned to area 800
  • Evenings- "Charlie" unit(e.g."four-ten charlie")is evening unit assigned to area 410
  • X-ray unit - special assignment or traffic enforcement (e.g. "Xray 2x" - station 2 xray 3x - "station 3" etc etc)
  • Set units - bike team or special assignment (e.g. "Set 45" - mason, "Set 21" - mt vernon)
  • Squad Supervisors (usually 1 sgt and 1 lt per squad) use a "car" designator (e.g. "car-two adam" = station 2 midnight LT, "car-twenty adam" = station 2 midnight sgt, "car-three baker" = station 3 daywork lt, "car-thirty baker" = station 3 daywork sgt).
  • CIS units are station level detectives (e.g. "CIS 21" = station 2 detective )
  • CIB units are department level detectives (major crimes etc. designators differentiate between divisions (auto squad, robbery etc)
  • Wagon unit is designated by ending in an 8 - (e.g. "418 adam" is a midnight unit assigned to area 410 with the wagon) Double units are designeted by ending with a 9 (e.g. 219A "two-nineteen adam" is a double unit in area 210/211)

Fairfax County uses plain language mostly. 10-Codes:

  • 10-33 - emergency traffic to follow
  • 10-3 - used to "hold" channel during major incident response
  • 10-61 - Dead
