Roanoke County Fire & Rescue is a combination fire and rescue department. That means they are a department made up of paid career firefighters and paramedics as well as volunteer firefighters and EMTs. Roanoke County is the largest combination fire and rescue department in the state of Virginia west of Richmond. The department operates out of 13 fire and rescue stations and one main administrative office and is responsible for providing fire and rescue coverage to an area of 250 square miles and a population of over 92,000 people. The department has 150 career personnel and approximately 250 active volunteers. These volunteers, consisting of both firefighters and EMTs, volunteer at all but two of Roanoke County's 13 fire and rescue stations. The department was founded in 1986. Up until then, most of the stations that currently make up Roanoke County Fire & Rescue were their own individual volunteer fire and rescue companies that covered their first due area of the county.

Roanoke County broke ground on the future station 12 in November of 2023 with an anticipated completion date of early 2025. The future station 12 is located at 1465 Mexico Way NE in Roanoke City and will serve the Bonsack area of Eastern Roanoke County. The new $8 million, 12,500 square foot fire and rescue station is expected to reduce demands on the Vinton stations as well as Botetourt County station 7 and Roanoke City station 14, which currently fill call gaps in this area. Station 12 will be staffed by full time Roanoke County Fire & Rescue firefighters once completed.

The Read Mountain Fire & Rescue station was established as a joint facility between Roanoke County and [[Botetourt County (VA)|Botetourt County]]. The station is located in Botetourt County, near the Roanoke County border. The station operated under the management of Roanoke County until July 2020, when a new operating agreement was signed and ownership was transferred to Botetourt County. The station was subsequently rebranded from Roanoke County Station 12 to Botetourt County Station 7. The Read Mountain station continues to be dispatched to calls by both jurisdictions, although Roanoke County will construct a new fire station in 2024, which will replace the Read Mountain station.

Roanoke County broke ground on the future station 12 in November of 2023 with an anticipated completion date of early 2025. The future station 12 is located at 1465 Mexico Way NE in Roanoke City and will serve the Bonsack area of Eastern Roanoke County. The new $8 million, 12,500 square foot fire and rescue station is expected to reduce demands on the Vinton stations as well as Botetourt County station 7 and Roanoke City station 14, which currently fill call gaps in this area. Station 12 will be staffed by full time Roanoke County Fire & Rescue firefighters once completed.

Botetourt Station 7 - Read Mountain

The Read Mountain Fire & Rescue station was established as a joint facility between Roanoke County and Botetourt County. The station is located in Botetourt County, near the Roanoke County border. The station operated under the management of Roanoke County until July 2020, when a new operating agreement was signed and ownership was transferred to Botetourt County. The station was subsequently rebranded from Roanoke County Station 12 to Botetourt County Station 7. The Read Mountain station continues to be dispatched to calls by both jurisdictions, although Roanoke County will construct a new fire station in 2024, which will replace the Read Mountain station.
