Lake County

Lake County Fire Departments

In the mid 1970's, the Lake County Fire Chiefs divided the Fire Departments and Dispatch Offices in Lake County IL into four quadrants (Quads) to operate on four primary frequencies. The division lines were IL 45 for east/west, and IL 137 for north/south. Quad numbers started in the NE and worked counter-clockwise around the county, then, within each quad, individual Departments were assigned numbers alphabetically.

They also assigned resources radio numbers by general types, as described in the Codes, Unit Lists, Pager Tones section below.

This system worked well, until call volumes increased, and several departments were forced to obtain their own frequencies, so as not to interfere with the operation of neighboring departments.

After the FCC mandate that the number of Public Safety Access Points (PSAP's) be reduced via consolidation, limitations in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) software, as well as conflicts in agency identifiers led to many departments moving to different unit radio numbering systems. The numbers used vary based on the operating protocol and capabilities of each PSAP.
