Unit Designators

Radio Call Sign and Registration Plates

The Division of Patrol has established a naming convention protocol for assigning radio call signs and State Police registration plates. This protocol provides uniformity across the Division’s various work units, Troops, and Statewide Operations Command.

Naming Convention Protocol (General)

  • Registration plates will correlate with radio call signs.
  • Registration plates for Troops will have a numerical prefix relating to the Troop followed by a dash and the car

number. Example: 3-1

  • Registration plates for Troop 10 will have the prefix “X” and identify via radio call sign as “x-ray.” Example:

X-1 “x-ray, one”

  • Registration plates for Canine Units will be designated by adding a “K” (verbalized “king”) after the Troop

numerical prefix and before the sequential car number. Canine units will identify via the complete radio call sign. Example: 6-K1 “six, king one”

  • Alpha designators on registration plates and radio call signs for specialty assignments other than canine officers

(ex., M-Motorcycles, V-VIO, B-Fleet/Evidence, S-SEO) will no longer be utilized. Officers should be issued a standard numerical plate from the respective sequencing block and identify via the radio using the assigned car number.

  • Registration plates for statewide units (ex., Deputy Director’s Office and Strategic Operations Command) will

have the prefix “O” and identify via the radio call sign as “ocean.” Example: O-1 “ocean, one”
Car Number Assignments (Troops)

  • Command Staff registration plate numbers shall be assigned in inverse order: the higher the rank, the lower the

number.

  • Each Troop shall be issued fifteen (15) plates for utility “pool” vehicles. Troops 3 and 15 shall be issued a

sufficient number of plates for utility “pool” vehicles.

  • TWI’s will be assigned a unique call sign even though they will not be issued a registration plate.

ISP Troop Units

1/2023 - Illinois State Police has reorganized their former twenty one Districts into eleven Troops (1-10, 15). District 15 (tollways) is now Troop 15, but the on-air radio identifiers for the other former District units have all changed. The below District information (with the possible exception of that for former District 15, the ISP Academy and District 25) should be considered obsolete. See this database page and its wiki page for more information.
