General Information

Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) (Dannelly Field) is a public and military use airport seven miles southwest of Montgomery, the capital of Alabama. Owned by the Montgomery Airport Authority, it is used for general aviation and military aviation.

Montgomery Air National Guard Base

The airport is also home for the Montgomery Air National Guard Base and the 187th Fighter Wing (187 FW) of the Alabama Air National Guard. If activated to federal service in the United States Air Force, the 187 FW is operationally-gained by the Air Combat Command (ACC).

The Alabama Army National Guard also has an Army Aviation Support Facility on the south side of the airport. Although primarily oriented to helicopter operations, fixed-wing aircraft can also be accommodated. The 31st Aviation Battalion was established here in 1986, and became the 1st Battalion, 131st Aviation Regiment a year later.

An Air National Guard Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit is located at the airport, equipped with multiple fire fighting and rescue vehicles, to augment the airport's civilian ARFF unit.

187th Fighter Wing (187 FW)

  • Callsigns - PYTHON, VENOM
  • Aircraft - F-16C+, RC-26B
  • Tail Code - AL

Mission - To provide the nation with a superior F-16C+ Aviation Package, RC-26B Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance platform, and Expeditionary Combat Support functions organized, trained, and equipped for rapid world-wide combat deployment, domestic relief, and law enforcement operations.

100th Fighter Squadron (100 FS)

In 2007, the Alabama legislature requested the National Guard Bureau to allow the Alabama Air National Guard 160th Fighter Squadron to be re-designated as the 100th Fighter Squadron so the state could honor the legacy of the World War II Tuskegee Airmen. This was obtained from the Air Force and on 12 September 2009, the 100th Flying Training Squadron was inactivated. The designation was transferred to the National Guard Bureau by the Air Force and it was allotted to the Alabama ANG. As a result, the 160th Fighter Squadron was inactivated, and the new 100th Fighter Squadron assumed its personnel, equipment and aircraft. The 160th Fighter Squadron stood down in a ceremony at Montgomery Air National Guard Base, on 13 September 2007, with the 100th Fighter Squadron standing up and being bequeathed the history, lineage, and honors of the World War II 100th Fighter Squadron and its successor units.

From the onset the squadron started training on the block 30 version of the General Dynamics F-16C/D Fighting Falcon that carried over from the 160th FS. The squadron flies the F-16 in a traditional air defense and conventional attack role.
